Dengue fever is spread by mosquitos. Mild dengue fever symptoms usually begin four to ten days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Symptoms causes a high fever and flu-like symptoms.

  • Headache

  • Muscle, bone or joint pain

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Pain behind the eyes

  • Swollen glands

  • Rash

Most people recover within a week or so. In some cases, symptoms worsen and can become life-threatening. This is called severe dengue, dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.

Where is Dengue fever found?

Where is Dengue fever found?

Dengue is very common in some parts of the world.

It's often found in tropical areas including:

  • parts of Africa and Asia

  • Central and South America

  • the Caribbean

  • the Pacific islands

  • some southern areas of North America

There's also a risk of getting dengue at certain times of the year (spring to November) in parts of southern Europe.

European countries where dengue has been found include:

  • Croatia

  • France

  • Italy

  • Spain

  • Portugal and Madeira
